A quality bed is an essential piece of bedroom furniture, and choosing one with the right design, materials and dimensions is key to a perfect fit for your space. We’ve outlined four core factors to consider when buying or customizing a bed, to help you make the best decision.
Dimension
We typically refer to king and queen-size beds, with sizing based on the mattress: a king-size mattress is 1800×2000mm and a queen-size one 1500×2000mm (this is the inner frame dimension). For most bedrooms, the outer frame size is also a critical consideration—leave a clearance of at least 600mm on both sides of the bed, or over 800mm if the space doubles as a main walkway, to ensure easy movement around the room.
Ideally, a bed should take up about one-third of the bedroom’s total area. For smaller spaces, it’s best not to let the bed exceed half the room’s size; otherwise, the sleeping area will feel overly cramped.
As for bed height, the mattress surface from the floor should align roughly with your knee height (around 500mm). For the elderly and children, a lower height of 400–450mm is more accessible for getting in and out of bed.
Headboard
Headboards are commonly made from leather, solid wood or metal. If your budget allows, a genuine leather headboard is highly recommended—it’s soft and delivers superior comfort. For solid wood headboards, opt for high-quality solid wood finished with water-based paint or wood wax for durability and a refined look. Metal headboards are not recommended, as they can’t be completely noise-free when you move or shift in bed.

Bed Frame Support
Bed frame support systems are usually either wooden slats or bed panels. For wooden slat supports, choose solid wood slats with a 5cm gap between them, and pair with at least six support legs for optimal stability. For bed panels with hydraulic storage, we don’t recommend this design unless you have high-quality hardware or plan to open the panel very infrequently.

Surroundings
As a general rule, avoid placing the bed so that its foot faces the bedroom door or a mirror directly, and steer clear of having a cross beam directly above the bed. These layout choices help create a greater sense of security while sleeping.
